International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Southern California District Council Gives Unanimous Endorsement to Wendy Greuel in Mayor’s Race

LOS ANGELES — In the latest evidence that her message of job creation and economic growth is resonating with working families, today Wendy Greuel won a unanimous endorsement from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Southern California District Council.

In making this endorsement, ILWU recognized Greuel’s commitment to ensuring expansion of international trade and good jobs at the Port of Los Angeles. ILWU Southern California District Council is the seventh individual labor union to endorse Greuel. Many ILWU Southern California District Council members live in the Los Angeles neighborhoods of San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor Gateway, and Harbor City.

“Wendy Greuel is a fighter and bold champion for working people—and that’s what Los Angeles residents need in their next Mayor,” Cathy Familathe, President of ILWU Southern California District Council. “She understands we need good, family-wage jobs and better schools for our kids. We know that Wendy will bring compassion, innovation, and determination to the Mayor’s office, and she’ll lead Los Angeles into better days. She’ll be a fierce advocate for the Port and the jobs that depend on it. That’s why we are proud to endorse her for Mayor.”

“Creating more good jobs to give every Angeleno a shot at the American Dream is what I've worked for throughout my career,” said Controller Greuel. “This endorsement underlines my resolve to ensure that the Port of Los Angeles remains a key economic engine for our region, supporting thousands of jobs. I am grateful for the support of the ILWU Southern California District Council and look forward to their help in my campaign.”

Significantly, Greuel has already won several early labor endorsements, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE), United Steel Workers (USW), Operating Engineers (I.U.O.E.) Local 501, Transportation Communications Union (TCU) Local 1315, Utility Workers Union of America Local 132, and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1277.

Last week Greuel won an endorsement from former Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick. In the last few weeks, Greuel has won a bevy of crucial endorsements, including a host of some of California’s leading conservationists, the California Women 4 Women Political Caucus, as well as State Senator Fran Pavley, along with State Assemblymembers Betsy Butler, Bonnie Lowenthal and Nancy Skinner.

What Matters to Wendy

"Everywhere I go, Angelenos tell me the same thing.

"They're frustrated with government. They believe the city doesn't work and they don't see a clear set of priorities on how to fix it. They want someone who they know will prioritize job creation and get our economy moving again. And, they want better schools for our kids.

"These are issues I will champion as Mayor."
