Leading Conservationists Endorse Wendy Greuel for Mayor

LOS ANGELES — Maintaining her potent force in the race to be LA’s next Mayor, today City Controller Wendy Greuel secured the support of more than a dozen respected conservation leaders.

Wendy Greuel has a strong record of working to build a more sustainable city since her first election to the City Council more than a decade ago. She increased the acreage of protected parkland, pushed to boost renewable energy at DWP and served as co-chair of the California Clean Cars campaign to help clean up our air.

Mary D. Nichols, Chair of California’s Air and Resources Board* said, “I am proud to give Wendy Greuel my enthusiastic endorsement. She understands the importance of the city’s role in reducing fossil fuel-based resources, while increasing the use of renewable energy, in order to preserve and protect our environment. With Los Angeles’ population approaching nearly 4 million residents, Wendy Greuel is the best candidate to lead our city into the future with more sustainable long-term growth.”

In addition to her work at the California Air and Resources Board*, Chair Nichols has served as Assistant Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Air and Radiation program under President Clinton, Secretary for California's Resources Agency and Director of the Institute of the Environment at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her priorities as Chair include moving ahead on the state's landmark climate change program (AB 32), steering the Board through numerous efforts to curb diesel pollution at ports and continuing to pass regulations aimed at providing cleaner air for Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley.

Jonathan Parfrey, founding director of the Green LA Coalition* said, “I’ve worked with Wendy Greuel for a number of years. Her steadfast commitment to strong, forward-thinking environmental policies is something I’ve always admired. As Mayor, I’m confident she’ll cultivate and utilize the ingenuity among our city’s environmental community to continue developing innovative environmental policies that promote sustained growth, clean and renewable energy, water conservation, and a new green economy. I am pleased to give her my full support.”

*Jonathan Parfrey led the Green LA Coalition for four years. The coalition brought together over sixty environmental and environmental justice organizations to jointly improve the city's water quality, air quality, open space, and transportation issues. In 2011, Parfrey founded Climate Resolve, the city's climate change organization. Parfrey is also a founder of CicLAvia, the popular bicycle and pedestrian event.

“Having the support of so many instrumental and widely recognized environmental champions means so much to me,” said Greuel. “Los Angeles is truly a beautiful city, and in order to maintain its treasured and iconic appearance, it’s critical that we continue fostering and encouraging strong environmental protections and sustainable policies for long-term, healthy growth.”

Earlier this week, State Senator Fran Pavley, one of the legislature's leading conservationists, also endorsed Greuel. Pavley secured passage of AB 32, California's landmark law addressing climate change. Also this week Greuel won support from the California Women 4 Women Political Caucus.

Recently Greuel's campaign announced the support of a powerful trio who will play a policy and leadership role in her campaign, including former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, civil rights and labor icon Dolores Huerta, and civil rights trailblazer John Mack.

In addition, recently the Greuel for Mayor campaign revealed the ‘Valley Leaders with Wendy’ committee. The full list of committee members, available here, encompasses a diverse range of local Valley leaders, including small business leaders, neighborhood council members, students, grassroots activists, community organizers, as well as a wide-ranging list of respected professionals.

The Greuel for Mayor campaign also recently announced the launch of the ‘Women with Wendy’ committee, which is comprised of community leaders, grassroots activists, professionals, students, and small business owners. The full list of the committee is available here.

What Matters to Wendy

"Everywhere I go, Angelenos tell me the same thing.

"They're frustrated with government. They believe the city doesn't work and they don't see a clear set of priorities on how to fix it. They want someone who they know will prioritize job creation and get our economy moving again. And, they want better schools for our kids.

"These are issues I will champion as Mayor."
